Fall 2021 Club Commercials

See below for descriptions and/or commercials for the clubs that students in each grade can participate in this Fall. Some clubs are available for only certain grades, so be sure to check the descriptions for more information. Club commercials are available to view for each club that has its name bolded with a hyperlink.

Clubs will meet on Friday afternoons starting October 15th; students will sign up during Morning Meeting on Wednesday, October 13th. Students can select their first and second choice clubs by clicking here. If you/your student did not get a chance to sign up for a club on October 13th in school, please contact Ms. O’Connell (jessica.oconnell@k12.dc.gov) or Ms. Wallin (lee.wallin@k12.dc.gov)

Pre-Kindergarten 3 & Pre-Kindergarten 4 - Students in PK3 and PK4 will remain in their designated cohorts and rotate through the different club activities.

  • Adapted Arts & Crafts with Ms. Abiodun, Ms. Taylor, & Ms. Hampton - SPED PK - This club will focus on inclusion practices in arts and crafts and benefit students with fine motor disabilities. Our hope for this club is that students will be able to express themselves creatively, build confidence, and strengthen their fine motor skills.

  • Creative Crafts with Ms. Johnson & Ms. Martinez- PK3-PK4 - Students will create various crafts for Early Childhood.

  • Line Dancing with Ms. Burroughs-Noel & Ms. Hampton - PK3-PK4

  • Rhythmic Dance & Movement with Ms. White & Ms. Greenfield - PK 4 only - The Rhythm is Gonna Get You! Pre-K 4 students will get their bodies moving as they dance along to kid-friendly videos that will help them follow directions in a fun and energetic way while developing their gross motor skills.

  • STEM-ulating with Ms. Angrand & Ms. Santiago- PK3-PK4 - Students will complete fun STEM activities to help spark their creativity and imagination related to all things STEM!

  • Yoga with Ms. Flowers & Ms. Martinez- PK3-PK4 - We will work on yoga poses, breathing and relaxation techniques. Kids yoga classes are so much fun including increased body awareness, strength and flexibility, and self-calming/emotional regulation skills (via breathing and relaxation exercises).

Kindergarten

  • Adapted Arts & Crafts with Ms. Flomo, Ms. F. Brown, & Ms. T. Johnson - SPED K-2 - This club will focus on inclusion practices in arts and crafts and benefit students with fine motor disabilities.   • Arts & Crafts with Ms. Leslie- K-1st Grade - We will do various crafts with a focus on seasonal themes and jewelry making. Crafts will include: finger knitting necklaces, crowns, paper bead bracelets, and bedazzling pumpkins.

  • Bee Bots Coding for Kids with Ms. Camp, Ms. Gilliam, & Ms. Burrell - K-1st Grade - Bee Bot is a coding program designed for elementary kids. It teaches them the basic of coding and provides opportunities for cooperative and collaborative learning.

  • Fun and Games/Board Games with Mr. Pace & Ms. Kirkland - K-2nd Grade - Children will learn and have fun playing a variety of board games the correct way while having fun.

  • Healthy Hearts Fitness Club with Ms. Beasley & Ms. Black - K-2nd Grade - Our club promotes staying active to maintain a healthy heart. We will be incorporating different ways to be active such as exercising, nature walks, stretching, etc.

1st - 2nd Grades

  • Puppets and Plays with Ms. Fiorini & Ms. Ortiz - 1st-2nd Grade - We are going to have students read and act out stories. It will be similar to a Reader's Theater but also give students a chance to create puppets to help act out the books we have read.

  • Recreational Games with Mr. Olumba - 1st-2nd Grade - We will engage in a myriad of physical activities, such as jumping rope, hula hooping, dodgeball games, tag games, kickball, relay games, obstacle courses, as well as traditional sports games.

3rd - 5th Grades

  • Adapted Arts & Crafts with Ms. Harris, Ms. Robinson, & Ms. Worthy - SPED 3rd-5th Grade - Arts and crafts club adapted to meets the needs and abilities of SPED students in self contained classes.

  • Anime Club with Mrs. Peele - 3rd-5th Grade - The anime club is where students can come together and enjoy watching their favorite animes. Students will also have the opportunity to create their own manga either individually or with a group.

  • Bingo with Ms. Bond, Ms. Stripling, & Ms. Hickerson - 3rd-5th Grade - Students will play a variety of BINGO games. Weekly non-perishable prizes will be given to winners.

  • Black Girl Magic with Ms. Henry - 4th-5th Grade - An affinity space where Black girls can explore self care, collective work and responsibility, and creating crafts that allow us to be creatives.

  • Cooking Club with Mr. Wiley & Mr. Sims - 3rd-5th Grade - Young Chefs will create delicious dishes.

  • Creative Writing with Ms. Heller - 3rd-5th Grade - Students will practice using their imagination by working on writing stories, poetry, songs, and/or comics.

  • Debate/Poetry Club with Ms. Gartin - 3rd-5th Grade - Students will practice and build argumentative skills. Students who choose not to debate can partake in poetry writing, reading and performing.

  • DJ Club with Mr. Fullmore - 3rd-5th Grade

  • Garden Club with Ms. Washington, Mrs. Mann, & Ms. Orire - 3rd-4th Grade - Our club will provide students with opportunities to grow their own flowers and vegetables, learn about soil, composting, watering, pruning and harvesting what is grown in our gardens. In, addition to that, students will create interesting garden signage, feeding and nesting stations for insects and animals as well as building structures that offer support for plants or the planting bed. We can't grow food without cooking some as well.

  • Gogo & Chess Club with Mr. TJ - 3rd-5th Grade

  • Harry Potter Club with Ms. Post, Mr. Stratton, & Ms. O’Connell - 3rd-5th Grade - A club for Harry Potter enthusiasts. We will watch some of the films, engage in trivia and HP-themed games, and do HP-themed crafts and other activities.

  • Recycle Club with Mr. Thompson - 3rd-5th Grade - The School Recycling Club assists schools in implementing, maintaining and improving recycling programs throughout the Whittier community and beyond! Team members will assist with recycling, composting, field trips, and fundraising.

  • SEM Projects with Ms. Wallin, Ms. Khan, & Ms. Ladd - 3rd-5th Grade (Students are selected to participate by their teachers) - Selected students can complete individual projects, competitions, or work in groups on their projects

  • Student Council with Ms. Wallin, Mr. Edwards, & Mr. Esposito - 3rd-5th Grade (Students have been elected to serve on the Student Council by their peers) - Elected 3rd-5th graders interested in leadership and school improvement will have opportunities to advocate for the school population as well as discussing and brainstorming solutions to problems observed at the local, federal, and national level.

  • Tennis Club with Ms. German, Mr. Payton, & Ms. Tedeschi - 3rd-5th Grade - Students will have the opportunity to practice and develop tennis skills.
